Why This One?
Let’s be direct: the 5.7x28mm cartridge has been looking for a truly practical, affordable host for years. The FN Five-seveN set the standard, but its price tag kept it out of many hands. The Ruger-57 offered a solid alternative. Now, KelTec enters the ring with the KP50, and from our bench, it brings something genuinely different to the table. This isn’t just another pistol; it’s a 50-round, double-stack magazine fed by a unique top-loading mechanism that changes how you interact with the platform. Having stripped several down in our shop, the engineering is pure KelTec—unconventional, clever, and built to function.
Since we started stocking this in mid-2024, it’s become a fixture. We see repeat customers coming back for a second one, or grabbing extra magazines. That tells us more than any marketing brochure. In our handling, the fit and finish is exactly as KelTec advertises—the polymer frame is robust, the metal components are well-machined, and the overall construction feels durable for its intended role. I appreciate a design that doesn’t overcomplicate things, and the KP50’s controls are straightforward, which is something I value whether I’m on the clock in a competition or teaching a family member the fundamentals.

Honest Assessment
Based on our direct experience receiving, inspecting, and shipping these, here’s the real breakdown:
✅ Pros:
- Unmatched Capacity: The 50-round magazine is the headline. In our function checks, loading all 50 rounds via the top port is a unique and surprisingly efficient process once you get the technique down.
- Exceptional Value: At this price point, you’re getting a 5.7x28mm pistol with a feature set that doesn’t exist elsewhere. Our sales data shows this is its biggest draw.
- Solid Construction: As noted, the product itself is well-made. The slide-to-frame fit on the units we’ve handled is consistent, and the polymer has a quality texture.
- Low Recoil Impulse: The 5.7x28mm is inherently low-recoil, and the KP50’s design manages it well. It’s a flat-shooting platform, which is great for follow-up shots.
- Solid Out-of-Box Sights: The fiber optic front is bright, and the adjustable rear is a welcome inclusion for dialing in your zero, something I always do with a new pistol.
❌ Cons:
- Bulk is Real: A 50-round double-stack magazine creates a wide grip. This won’t fit every hand comfortably. You’re trading ergonomics for capacity.
- Magazine Loading Learning Curve: The top-loading mechanism isn’t intuitive at first. It requires a specific motion. It’s not difficult, but it’s different.
- Packaging: We have to mention this—while the pistol’s finish is excellent, the factory box is flimsy. Every unit we’ve received has been perfectly protected inside, but the outer box feels cheap. It’s a minor point, but one our warehouse staff notes.
Who Should / Shouldn’t Buy
Buy the KP50 if: You are a 5.7x28mm enthusiast wanting maximum magazine capacity in a pistol format. You appreciate innovative, unconventional firearm designs and don’t mind a learning curve. You’re looking for the most cost-effective entry into the 5.7 pistol world with a standout feature. You want a unique range toy or a pistol for certain competitive formats where round count matters.
Skip the KP50 if: You have smaller hands and prioritize ergonomics above all else. You want a traditional, slim-profile 5.7 pistol like the FN or Ruger. You’re unwilling to adapt to a new magazine loading system. Your primary need is for a concealed carry weapon—this is not that pistol.
Q & A
Is the KelTec KP50 reliable?
Based on feedback from our 34 buyers, who collectively rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars, reliability with quality factory ammunition is reported as very good. Like any new firearm, a proper break-in period and using ammunition it likes is recommended. We’ve had minimal returns or complaints regarding function.
How do you load the 50-round magazine?
The magazine loads through a port on the top. You depress the follower with a thumb, slide rounds in from the front, and use the provided loading tool (or a similar object) to push them fully to the rear. It’s different but becomes quick with practice.
What is the trigger like?
It’s a single-action trigger. In our handling, the break is crisp with a short reset. It’s a competent trigger for a production pistol in this class, better than many out-of-the-box striker-fired options.
Can you use FN Five-seveN or Ruger-57 magazines?
No. The KP50 uses a proprietary 50-round double-stack magazine due to its unique top-loading design. Magazines from other 5.7x28mm pistols are not compatible.
Is it optics-ready?
No, the KP50 is not optics-ready from the factory. It is designed with iron sights only. The rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation.
Where can I buy KelTec KP50 online?
You can purchase it right here from Glockautoswitches. We are an authorized retailer, and every firearm is processed through our FFL with full compliance. We ship directly to your local FFL holder.
What’s included in the box?
The pistol comes with one 50-round magazine, a cable lock, a magazine loading tool, and the owner’s manual. As noted, just be aware the physical box itself is not the sturdiest.

I don’t write reviews often but glockautoswitches.com deserves one. The KelTec KP50 5.7x28mm Pistol is exactly what I was looking for. Good build quality, snug fit on my Glock 45, and the price was the best I could find after checking multiple sites. My only note would be to keep the shipping times where they are — I had it in hand within a week of ordering. Will be a repeat customer.
